Beginning with v8.4.0 Update 1, the EnergyPlus installers include all transition programs from v7.2.0 to current. This archive contains transition programs from v1.0 to v8.4.0.

To use them, extract the files to /EnergyPlus/Install/Dir/PreProcess/IDFVersionUpdater .

If any files are duplicates, you may allow these to overwrite, except do not overwrite v7.2.0 and later. These files are 64-bit Linux executables.

Extract the files to /Applications/EnergyPlus-n-n-n/PreProcess/IDFVersionUpdater/

For the initial release of EnergyPlus v8.2.0 on Windows, EP-Launch or IDF Editor may fail to launch due to a missing system file, such as Comdlg32.ocx, msinet.ocx or vsflex7l.ocx.  This can be resolved by installing v8.2.0-Update 1 which also fixes other critical bugs:

Textpad editor (www.Textpad.com) is a simple text editor that with the syntax file can highlight syntax in EnergyPlus IDF, IDD, IMF, EXPIDF, etc files.
Ultraedit editor (www.ultraedit.com) is a simple text editor that with the syntax file can highlight syntax in EnergyPlus IDF, IDD, IMF, EXPIDF, etc files.

This sample Weather Converter definition file (.def) may be used to convert IWEC2 data files to epw. See instruction in the Auxiliary Programs Document. Edit this file to match the specific location to be converted.

Sometimes, for whatever reasons, files are in "Unix" format (aka Linux) on Windows machines and these cannot be read by the IDFEditor though EnergyPlus will have no problem with them.

Attached to this article are two small utilities that can be run from the command prompt to convert files To dos format or likewise to Unix format.

ToDOS <filename>  (where filename can also be *.idf)

ToUnix <filename>

This set of programs and associated files should be extracted to your \PreProcess\IDFVersionUpdater folder

This is for the Windows platform (32-bit binaries, so that they will run on 32-bit or 64-bit platforms).  It will ask you to replace the IDFVersionUpdater GUI and associated libraries - they are the same as in the installer -- you can replace with these or not, as you choose.

If any files are duplicates, you may allow these to overwrite, except do not overwrite v7.2.0 and later.
